How a dog food calculator by weight works
The calculator starts with resting energy requirement (RER), then applies a broad life-stage factor to estimate a daily calorie starting point. The result is divided by the calorie density printed on the food so the estimate can be shown as cups per day.
Why the food label matters
Two dog foods can contain different calories per cup even when the serving size looks similar. Enter the calorie density from the exact food label you plan to feed. Choose kcal per cup, per kilogram or per 100 grams, exactly as shown on your food label. Cup-based results require kcal per cup; gram-based results use the weight units. For kcal per can, follow the manufacturer feeding instructions.
Use the estimate carefully
This tool is a general planning estimate, not a personalized veterinary feeding plan. A dog's actual energy needs can differ with age, activity, body condition, health and other factors. Monitor body condition and follow your veterinarian's guidance for health or nutrition decisions.
